IMMACULATE’S JOURNEY
Immaculate Nakiwuka was born in a rural polygamous family, where a girl’s child’s labour is used in the running of the family, right from gardening for food, cooking, nursing the sick, and caring for her siblings. A family where mothers compete to provide the most domestic hardworking daughter for the family, and where the girl will miss school to provide labour to her family.
Immaculate’s family like many other families would not provide her with the essential items like books, pens, pads, painkillers in case, and not even packed lunch to eat while at school. As a result, none of Immaculate’s older girl siblings studied beyond grade 7, however, years back the family of the founder of UREEP visited her family and started having conversations with the parents about her and her education, and provided some support to immaculate, as a result there was a great change in her parents’ attitude and they gave immaculate more time for her studies and because of that Immaculate became competitive at school, she became a leader of her fellow pupils, studied had, and joined a secondary school with a second grade primary 7 results.
Immaculate joined Kyambogo university and did a degree in accountancy, Immaculate has been working with the United Nation until recently when her contract ended, she is using the experience to look for another job. Meanwhile, Immaculate is planning to work with UREEP as a volunteer to inspire the young girls and mothers to appreciate the pride of a girl child. She is a happy person who supports herself and her family in a more affordable and sustainable way.
